Tata Racemo: Full Specification Breakdown – Engine, Mileage, Price & More

At Thenewsnamaste, we’re dedicated to keeping you ahead of the curve. Tata Racemo was a sports coupe concept unveiled by Tata Motors at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show as part of their then-new sub-brand TAMO. It generated huge curiosity as India’s first ever digitally created global car with a bold look and promising power. But the project was canceled regretfully by Tata Motors due to shifting priorities and production cost. Although it never entered mass production, the Racemo is an intriguing chapter in Indian car history. Let’s proceed to its specifications, expected price, launch date timeline, mileage, engine, etc., in separate steps:

2. Price:

When the Tata Racemo was initially launched, the price in India was about ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom). This was the intended price to ensure it was an affordable sports car, and perhaps a rival for the DC Avanti. However, since the car never moved into production, this is an approximate price. If Tata Motors were to revive the project in the future, the price could be varied based on market conditions and any changes in specifications or features. There were some projections of a price band of ₹20-₹30 lakh.

3. Launch Date:

The Tata Racemo was originally scheduled for an Indian launch by mid-2018. It was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo, fueling the excitement. But in the same year, Tata Motors announced the axing of the TAMO sub-brand and the resulting Racemo project, on account of costly production and a strategy shift to mass market cars and SUVs. To date, there has been no announcement regarding a potential future launch date for the Tata Racemo. While there have been isolated rumors of a possible revival, perhaps in an electric version, nothing has been formalized.

4. Mileage:

As the Tata Racemo was a performance sports coupe with a relatively small turbo petrol engine, its mileage expectations were not its highest concern. However, given the 1.2-liter engine and the low kerb weight of the vehicle (around 800 kg), the mileage would have been anywhere from 15-18 kmpl depending on normal driving usage. Please note that this is an estimate, and the actual figure would have been derived from a multitude of factors like driving usage and traffic. The all-electric variant, the Racemo +-, shown later would have offered a very different “mileage” in electric range, with range of approximately 350 km on a charge.

5. Engine:

The engine of the Tata Racemo was a 1.2 Liter New Generation Turbo-Charged Aluminum 3-Cylinder Petrol Engine from Tata’s Revotron family. The mid-mounted engine was tuned to deliver a punchy performance with:

  • Displacement: 1198 cc
  • Configuration: 3-cylinder
  • Aspiration: Turbocharged with intercooler
  • Maximum Power: 190 HP (or 186 bhp as per some reports) at 6500 rpm
  • Maximum Torque: 210 NM at 2500 rpm

The engine was paired with a 6-speed AMT gearbox with paddle shifters, which offered quick and engaging gear shifts. The rear-wheel-drive, mid-engine setup was intended to provide sporty handling characteristics.

In Conclusion:

The Tata Racemo was a risky and promising initiative that didn’t receive the production light. It signaled Tata Motors’ design and engineering capabilities, foreshadowing a potential entry into India’s budget sports car market. With its striking Marcello Gandini design, a turbocharged powerplant, and light-weight body, the Racemo promised to revolutionize. Although the launch status remains unknown, the specs and early hype for the car remain enough to keep the car an iconic concept in Indian automobile history.
